Conference venues and directions

Conference venues and directions

The main part of the conference will take place in the Leibnizhaus, which is located in the Centre of the Historical Old Town of Hannover. A few events will take place in the nearby Hanns-Lilje-Haus.

Get to the conference venues

The conference venues are located within convenient reach of Hannover Main Station (Hannover Hauptbahnhof).

  • From Hannover Airport (HAJ) to Hannover Main Station:
Take the S-Bahn S5 to Hannover Main Station (Hannover Hauptbahnhof). The S-Bahn station is located in the basement between Terminals B and C.

  • By train to Hannover Main Station:
Long-distance and regional trains go directly to Hannover Main Station.

If you take the plane, it might be advantageous to go to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) and take a direkt ICE to Hannover. Especially, if you have to take a connecting flight to Hannover. There is an ICE train station at Frankfurt Airport and some trains go directly to Hannover. Sometimes you have to change in Frankfurt Main Station. Some Airlines sell Rail&Fly tickets or sell the train as a connection to the flight (I know that Lufthansa does this). Düsseldorf (DUS) also has an ICE train station direct at the Airport.

Hamburg and Berlin also might be interesting options, but there you have to use public transport from the Airport to the Main Stations.

From Hannover Main Station to the conference venues

If you arrive at Hannover Main Station by S-Bahn or train, leave the plattform. Each plattform has two stairs with escalators each, one going up and one going down. Each plattform also has one elevator.

  • By public transport (underground light rail):
After leaving the plattform, turn in the direction of increasing track numbers. The underground light rail station is located at the end of Hannover Main Station. Take the blue lines 3, 7 (destination Wettbergen), or 9 (destination Empelde). The stop closest to the conference venues is Markthalle/Landtag.
  • By foot:
The walking distance to Leibnizhaus is approx. 1km. After leaving the plattform, turn in the direction of decreasing track numbers. The path goes essentially straight ahead, through the city centre. You can use the Marktkirche as a landmark. From the Marktkirche you can get to the Leibnizhaus via Kramerstraße or to the Hanns-Lilje-Haus via Knochenhauerstraße.

Tickets and information for public transport in Hannover

Public transport in Hannover mainly consists of buses and underground light rail. To and from the airport you take the S-Bahn.

You can find detailed information for public transport tickets here: https://www.gvh.de/en/tickets-prices/price-overview/

From the Airport: You need a ticket for zone AB (zones A and B combined). If you only want a one-way ticket to the conference venue or your hotel, a Single ticket may suffice. If you plan to ride more than once, a Day ticket may be more advantageous. If you buy your ticket from the vending machine on the S-Bahn platform, please make sure to validate it (there is a separate machine for this). Validation is only required for tickets you buy at S-Bahn ticket vending machines (generally: ticket vending machines operated by Deutsche Bahn and other regional train operators). Tickets you buy at underground light rail ticket machines do not need to be validated (rule of thumb: if your ticket does not fit into a validator, you do not need to validate). The ticket you buy for the S-Bahn is also valid on the underground light rail. An alternative to buying a ticket for the S-Bahn on the platform is to buy an online ticket. Online tickets do not need to be validated.

Leibnizhaus

Leibnizhaus is situated in the Centre of the Historical Old Town between the History Museum to the left and the Parliament of Lower Saxony State (Landtag) on the right. It was built in the 1980s and has been used as the Guesthouse and Conference Centre of Hanover University since 1983.

The baroque facade of the central building at Holzmarkt 5 is a recreation of the former Leibnizhaus, which stood at No.10, Schmiedestrasse – a five minutes‘ walk from Holzmarkt square– until one October night of 1943, when the richly decorated building was completely destroyed in an air raid during World War II. From the end of the 14th century, when a Gothic mansion was first mentioned in municipal documents, the house underwent a number of alterations, until in 1698, its most famous resident, scholar, mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz moved in and lived there until his death in 1716. He was employed by the Hanoverian Court as counsellor, genealogist and librarian. The Lower Saxony State Library (Gottfried-Wilhelm-Leibniz-Bibliothek) in Waterloostrasse 8 is the successor of the 17th-century court library, which was then kept in Leibnizhaus.

Hanns Lilje Haus

The Hanns Lilje Haus has existed as a hotel and conference centre of the Evangelical Lutheran Regional Church of Hanover since 1991.

Hanns Lilje, who gave his name to the house, was Bishop of the Regional Church of Hanover from 1947 to 1971 and an important personality of his time. He once said: "A bishop (...) must be able to make it clear to a broad public, far beyond the boundaries of the official, recognised, traditional church, what it means that there is a church and where its tasks lie." According to him, the Hanns Lilje Haus should be a place of encounter not only for Christians, but also serve as a hostel and meeting place for all other guests or groups of guests.
After it was inaugurated in its present form by former Bishop Hirschler on 12 April 1991, the Hanns Lilje House initially had a strong orientation towards church music. Gradually, however, it opened up to other groups of guests and today appeals to a broad target group and is open to all.
